Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) is an invaluable screening tool which allows a correct program of diet and supplements to be designed for each individual's specific needs. Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis looks at chronic poisoning over a period of time, and is different from acute poisoning. It is especially useful for examining exposure to toxic elements.

E.g. If your hair reveals an elevated calcium level two or three times normal, then your calcium level within the body may be elevated also. If this is the case, a strong tendency exists for arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries due to calcium plaques). If your calcium level is low, then a tendency exists toward osteoporosis, increased tendency to bone fractures, dental caries, muscle cramps, etc.

Mercury: Sources of mercury - contaminated fish (tuna, swordfish, shark, and tilefish tend to accumulate mercury) and shellfish, contact lens solutions, vaccines, flu shots, dental amalgams, occupational exposure and contaminated air and water. Mercury toxicity may contribute to nervousness, irritability, immune system dysfunction, thyroid imbalance, autism, ADHD, hyperactivity and other behavioral difficulties.

Cadmium: Sources of cadmium - junk food, tap water, cigarette and marijuana smoke, industrial exposure, contaminated shellfish and coffee drinking. Cadmium toxicity may contribute to symptoms of fatigue, cardiovascular disease and anti-social behavior.

Aluminum: Sources of aluminum include: beverages packaged in aluminum cans, food in aluminum containers, food wrapped in aluminum foil.  Aluminum toxicity will contribute to memory loss, dementia, fatigue, behavioural difficulties and skin rashes.

Deep grooves across the child's fingernails could mean that he/she has calcium deficiency. Calcium is essential for the development of teeth, bones and nails. Mothers who are deficient in calcium give birth to babies with calcium deficiency. Children with low calcium may develop high blood pressure and bone disorders such as rickets.

Too much calcium will cause symptoms of depression. Children can get calcium from dairy products, dark leafy vegetables, almonds and dried beans. However, children with food sensitivities (especially kids with ADHD) are not recommended to drink milk as they contain casein that can be hard for them to digest. Indigested casein might slow down their brain activities further.

Potassium helps to build proteins and muscles in the body. Too much potassium can weaken muscles, disrupt heartbeat and cause mild paralysis. A deficiency in potassium can cause irritability, fatigue and confusion. Potassium can be found in food such as bananas, tomatoes, carrots and avocados.

Many researches show that children with lack of zinc often display oppositional behaviour. Zinc deficiency will lead to poor left-brain development, which may lead to learning difficulties. It can also be an indicator for autism. If white spots can be seen on the child's fingernails, it is likely that he/she has zinc deficiency. Food such as oysters, pumpkin seeds, and salmon are rich in zinc.
